Why Certification?

MDR® Certification is essential to standardize the required education for individuals who want to become valued members of the Surgical Team. The NBCMDR has defined the role of an MDR®. A MDR® is not an employee of the hospital but can contribute as a valued member of the Patient-Focused Surgical Team by invitation only to the surgical suite under the direction of a Surgeon. A Certified MDR® brings value and education to the surgical suite, aligning with the commitment to the Patient’s Before Profits™ Pledge and understanding the responsibility of being Ready For Surgery™. Certification does not replace Credentialing.

Credentialing serves as a point of access control, and NBCMDR supports Certification as a part of Credentialing, referred to as the Hospital Vendor Passport™.

The Hospital Vendor Passport™ allows for the Transparency that is crucial for healthcare facilities to verify that MDRs are adequately trained on the products they represent. Presently, many Credentialing platforms, often managed by Group Purchasing Organizations, do not require MDRs® to disclose if they represent multiple companies or manufacturers. The NBCMDR sees this as a patient safety issue as Healthcare facilities cannot verify that multiple manufactures have trained single MDR’s® representing multiple companies.

NBCMDR has provided www.mdr.directory as a current voluntary solution for MDR® Transparency on the products they are trained and represent.

Currently, there are three types of MDRs®. Patient Safety starts with verification of educational requirements on the products they represent. Certification ensures a MDR® is removed from the national system should an infraction occur.  Presently Credentialing does not address this topic and NBCMDR see this as Patient Safety Issue.
